The Tontitown Area Fire Department (TAFD) was formed in 1979 under Arkansas 176 of 1963. It began as an all-volunteer fire department serving a response area of 40 square miles that includes the city of Tontitown. Continued growth of the area has led the department to become a combination department with paid personnel serving alongside the volunteers.

The primary sources of funding for TAFD are derived from cities who have an inter-local agreement with TAFD, by membership of the citizens residing in the TAFD coverage area outside the city limits, and by quarterly payments from Washington County. Membership dues are supplemented with fundraisers undertaken by the fire fighters at various times throughout the year.
